Did you know that Merazonia is located in a biological corridor? 🌳 Meaning the surrounding land acts as a pathway between two large national parks: Llanganates and Sangay. 📍This pathway is a hotspot for biodiversity! Home to many of the worlds most elusive and endangered species, such as, ocelots, bush dogs and of course jaguars. There is nothing in this world that a woolly monkey enjoys more than food! 🐒 Here at Merazonia we do our best to create as natural a diet for our animals as possible. Three times a day our woolly monkeys receive large bunches of fresh leaves from the surrounding jungle, as well as tasty native palm fruits and vegetables 😋 It is always a rewarding feeling watching them happily munch on all the tasty leaves one finds, even if they only take one tiny bite and throw it on the floor 😜 Do you remember the name of any of their favourite leaves? 🌿 . . . ¡No hay nada en este mundo que disfrute más un mono chorongo que la comida! 🐒 Aquí en Merazonia, hacemos todo lo posible para ofrecer a nuestros animales una dieta lo más natural posible. Every year thousands of parrots of different species are hunted and smuggled horrifically, some will sadly not survive 😥 Many birds are stripped from their ability to fly after having their wings clipped 🥺 This means that they cannot be released and at Merazonia we provide them with the best care possible, including medical care, walkways, daily enrichment, special diets and other bird companions 🪶 On occasion, parrots are kept as pets for many years! For this reason, they may not cope well in social groups and can isolate themselves in those conditions, so they prefer the company of people or very specific birds. This is the case for Margaret, Checkers and Carlos who are rare exceptions to our strict hands off policy and enjoy the extra attention they get from our volunteer team 💚 💪 Together we can make sure that these enchanting animals are not used as pets or for entertainment! . . . #VerdaderaHistoriaDeTerror 😱 ¿Sabías que los loros son las aves más traficadas internacionalmente? 🥁 Big Reveal! 🤩 The cage extension for our resident puma Pangui is now complete 🎉 We are beyond grateful to have such an incredible and supportive community 🥰 you have helped us make this dream a reality! Now that Shimi, Chester and Koba have moved to their release cage, it was time for our younger woolly monkey group (Tini, Tapu and Lyla) to move into their old enclosure 😍 This cage is further from our human area with more space for climbing and playing for the well growing members of this group 🤩. They arrived here at the start of the year as timid neonatal monkeys 🥺 But now, they no longer receive milk and have no interest in being around people - a benefit of being able to give them them a hands-off approach from a young age 🙌 Hopefully these three continue to grow stronger and more independent, so that one day they can join the others back in the jungle where they belong 🥰 . . . . . . . It makes us so happy to see long term resident Moira adapting so well to her life with fellow capuchin monkeys Tina, Sophia and Tommy. ☺️ Moira has been with us since 2012 and although we had tried to introduce her to the group in the past unfortunately she was never accepted 😥, instead Moira lived with young capuchins Ryan and Elliot. After Ryan and Elliot moved to @amazoonico a decision was made to see if Moira would now be accepted by alpha female Tina. This introduction was done slowly and carefully, to our delight it went incredibly well! 🤩 Moira has now been living with Tina, Sophia and Tommy for a few months and is fully settled into her new life, enjoying frequent grooming sessions from Tina. 😍 . . . . . . . Nos hace muy felices ver al mono capuchino Moira, residente desde hace mucho tiempo, adaptarse bien a su vida con Tina, Sophia y Tommy. ☺️ Moira está con nosotros desde 2012. Follow along as we make various enrichments for all of the animals at Merazonia! 😍 Enrichment ensures that all animals are cared for mentally aswell as physically. They prevent boredom and stress during their rehabilitation in captivity and encourage natural behaviours such as foraging and problem solving 🤔. Every day we provide various enrichments to all animals. That can be in the form of food such as food parcels, fish, whole coconuts and ‘fruit vines’ or natural enrichments such as deadwood, mossy branches and bromeliads 🤩. #NEWARRIVAL Meet Nala! A young red howler monkey who arrived at Merazonia recently from Tueri Wildlife Hospital in Quito. Due to her size and vulnerability, Nala receives 24 hour specialised care but is doing incredibly well 😍. She is growing bigger by the day and is getting more and more confident. She spends her days practicing her climbing skills and is slowly being introduced to leaves and the jungle (under the careful supervision of her carer) 🥰. Nala has a lot of personalty and curiosity for the world around her. And of course… posseses a lot of typical howler sass 🫣. Exciting times ahead for our young woolly group as they have just been moved to another enclosure for their soft release! 🤩 Chester, Shimi and Koba have grown up and are ready for their next chapter in life! We will give them the next few weeks to adjust and in the meantime, the team will be working hard preparing the surrounding forest with ropes and feeders 🌱 This woolly release will be very similar to our last, meaning that our troop will be helped with food and careful monitoring as they settle into the jungle 😍 Thank you to everyone who has helped Merazonia give back to animals the life they deserve. We recently had this beautiful two-toed sloth brought to Merazonia after being found close to a house. Unfortunately, as the human world expands into the jungle, there are more cases of wildlife encounters, as these are usually territories animals used to live in 😞 This is one of the biggest sloths we have ever had here at Merazonia! Weighing close to 8kg 🤯 so it was necessary to perform his health check among four people 🫣 luckily he was in perfect state and declared ready for release 🤩 After giving him an hour to settle, he was relocated to an area with lots of connected and tasty Cecropia trees 😋 (a sloths paradise). He happily set off up a tree ready to explore his new home! 😍 . . . . . Recientemente trajeron a Merazonia a este hermoso perezoso de dos dedos que fue encontrado cerca de una casa. Desafortunadamente, a medida que el mundo humano se expande en la selva, hay más casos de encuentros con la vida silvestre, ya que estos solían ser territorios en los cuales habitaban 😞 ¡Este es uno de los perezosos más grandes que hemos tenido aquí en Merazonia! Little Fionn has recently completed his quarantine and began his introductions with young Akira and our cheeky teenagers Pepi, Frodo and Freyja 🥳 He definitely has a strong personality - with the famous howler attitude 🤪 and he seems over the moon to be making new friends and stealing their tasty leaves😆! Using trap cameras, we monitor wildlife throughout the nearby forests 🎞️ Some days we see smaller species like mice and birds and others, it is possible to see spectacled bears, pumas and jaguars! 👀 Here is a look into who has been wandering around us recently! 📸 1. #NEWARRIVAL Meet Fionn, a young male red howler monkey who was recently brought to Merazonia after being rescued from the illegal trade 🥺 Upon his arrival, Fionn was completely traumatised! Large scars around his waist are a constant reminder of all that he endured during his time being kept as a pet 😢 We also noticed he was probably older than his size which can be common in undernourished animals. After lots of rest and attentive care his very sassy personality has began to shine through, as has his love of tasty leaves 😋 Unfortunately, it is very easy to break a spirit but it takes time and patience to heal one, and that truly is the case for little Fionn! Unas cicatrices grandes, alrededor de su cintura, son un recordatorio constante de todo lo que soportó durante el tiempo que lo tuvieron como mascota 😢 También nos dimos cuenta que probablemente era mayor que su tamaño, lo cual suele ser común en animales desnutridos. Después de mucho descanso y cuidados, su personalidad atrevida ha empezado a brillar, al igual que su amor por las hojas sabrosas 😋 Desafortunadamente, es muy fácil romper un espíritu, pero se necesita tiempo y paciencia para curarlo, y ese es en verdad el caso del pequeño Fionn! Esperamos verlo salir de su caparazón cada vez más y, con suerte, presentarlo a nuestro travieso grupo de aulladores 🤪 una vez que complete su cuarentena 🥳

🥹 Our once neonatal woolly monkeys aren’t quite so small anymore! Tini and Tapu have definitely had a massive growth spurt, and are getting stronger by the day! 🤗 They are now also living with young Lyla, who was struggling to keep up with our older woolly group, but since her move she is absolutely thriving 💪 All three personalities have began to shine! In typical woolly monkey fashion, this means that they have a constant case of energy filled play sessions ⚡️ followed by countless hours of midday naps in the sun 😎 and lots of time spent enjoying all of their favourite leaves and veggies 😋! A day like no other! The morning started just like most, our coordinator Kaya headed up to track our four released woolly monkeys Leo, Ojo, Pedro and Django but to her surprise… she didn’t find four monkeys… she found 20! 🤩 This is by far the largest group of wild woollies we have ever seen here at Merazonia and watching our released juveniles integrate with such a big group was beyond what we could ever have hoped for these guys! 🥰 Watching them adapt and grow more wild, day by day, has been a very rewarding experience! Even timid Ojo began displaying and shaking the trees at us whilst stood beside a large wild female and her baby 😍incredible behaviour to witness. #NewEnclosure The grand reveal is here! 🎉 Our incredible new enclosure is now home to our three young red howlers Pepi, Frodo and Freyja! This mischievous trio is absolutely loving their new home and all the space they have for their energy filled play sessions. They can also explore up high for the first time in their lives! Watching these guys appreciating every inch of this new space is a beautiful sight to see. They have even had some visits from our released howlers who have been seen frequently at the new cage, showing great interest in their small neighbours. We are so excited for our two woolly monkeys Diego and Carlitos who have recently set off on a new adventure at the wonderful centre @amazoonico . After many years spent with us here at Merazonia, Diego and Carlitos have become very much loved and known residents. Many of you may have spent hours in the jungle finding their favourite juicy red ferns 😋 and watching as they flew around their cage with impressive agility and strength, however unfortunately release was not possible for these two, so when an opportunity arose for them to move to a large open air enclosure where they could climb high in the trees with other woolly monkeys…the planning began! Before moving to @amazoonico the two boys had to be castrated, in order to ensure no babies were born in captivity, as they would be living in a social group consisting of one male and three females. After they were fully healed the plan was in full swing 💪 The boys were prepared and made the four hour journey under the watch of coordinators Brian, Arthur and Jason. Upon arrival at Amazoonico Diego and Carlitos were transported by canoe to their new home and introductions began! It took them some time to adjust to their new surroundings with a few nail biting escape attempts made by Carlitos 🥴but soon, the two boys began exploring and climbing high in the tree tops - an emotional sight for many of us 🥺 After more observations and seeing the positive interactions between Diego and Carlitos and their new group, it was easy to say that they have a beautiful life ahead of them 🤩 Although their presence will be dearly missed here at Merazonia we can rest well, knowing that they are swinging through the trees and enjoying as close to a natural life as possible and we couldn’t be happier for them. 📸 1. Another sloth who came into the care here at @merazonia_refuge after being found clinging to a house in a nearby town, this is the third sloth in the past three weeks! This has become more and more common as human activity encroaches on their natural environment causing more incidences like this. Time for some bird check-ups! 🩺 🦜 Recently, Merazonia’s parrots underwent their standard health checks 👏 With a grand total of 29 birds in our care, you can imagine this was quite the task! 😅 ❤️‍🩹 Thankfully our birds were in the safe hands of onsite vet Adriana and long-term volunteer Arthur who has over 3 years experience of bird care & rehabilitation in Europe 🦅 They were also accompanied by vet student Maaike, who was the perfect addition to this dream team! Roads represent a great danger for wildlife, as these usually split their ecosystems and generally cars travel at high speeds 🏎️ This was true for a roadside hawk we recently received who was unfortunately hit by a car 😔 🚑 Upon arrival we carried out a check up and luckily there were no broken bones, but he presented a large concussion. With close monitoring and some anti-inflammatory medicine the improvement was evident, so this hawk was ready for the next step 🦅 🪽 We made sure there was no issue with behaviour and flying by transferring him to our bird of prey enclosure and it was clear that he could go back home to the jungle! 👀 Watch this beautiful roadside hawk get released back into the forest 🌳 📸 Roadside hawk receiving check-up 📸 Minutes after release 📹 Release from our bird of prey enclosure by our long term volunteer Arthur :: Las carreteras representan un gran peligro para la fauna silvestre, ya que estas suelen dividir sus ecosistemas y generalmente los autos circulan a altas velocidades 🏎️ Esto le sucedió a un gavilán campestre que recibimos hace poco y que lamentablemente fue golpeado por un auto 😔 🚑 Al llegar le realizamos un chequeo y afortunadamente no había huesos rotos, pero presentaba una importante contusión. Recently, we received this gorgeous Red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor) from @hfaunasilvestretueri in Quito. We were told she had been kept as a pet for at least 5 years before a member of the public handed her over to the authorities. After spending a short period of time at Tueri, she was handed over to Merazonia in preparation for her return back into the wild 😍 On arrival to Merazonia, it was clear that she was in the midst of shedding her skin, meaning she was low in strength and in need of a few more days to recuperate before being ready for release 👏 After one week with us and finishing up her shedding, this lovely lady was ready to go and we wished her all the best as we watched her disappear into the jungle, where she belongs 🐍 :: Hace poco recibimos a esta hermosa boa matacaballos (Boa constrictor) del Hospital de Fauna Silvestre Tueri en Quito. Nos contaron que fue mantenida como mascota durante al menos 5 años antes de que un miembro del público la entregara a las autoridades. 🐵 Wild woollies visit our released troop! 😍Woolly release update #part3 It’s been just over 3 months since our sub-adult woolly monkeys were released and wow how things have changed! Beachboy has a new friend! 💙 💛 💫 After making a wonderful physical transformation since arriving to Merazonia 8 months ago, there was just one thing left to do for Beachboy: find him a friend! 🥹 So, we were delighted to hear from nearby wildlife centre @yanacochawildlife recently to tell us that they had a young blue-gold macaw, named Captain Sparrow, also in need of a companion 😍 👏 We soon got to work, organising the paperwork for Beachboy to make his move. Our main goal is always to find the best possible outcome for each individual animal, whether that be release or a forever solution. And for some, that means sending animals to other locations for them to be their happiest 🌈 📸 1: The morning of his move - Beachboy has no idea what is in store for him 💙 📸 2: A little rainy for first introductions but Captain Sparrow waits patiently to meet her new buddy 💛 Ps. Captain Sparrow & Beachboy?! Well, that went better than expected! 🧡🙈 After a long anticipated wait to introduce Red howler male Floki to our released girls, the day finally came for oldest female Emuya to enter Floki’s cage 👀 Introductions need careful planning when it comes to adult monkeys like Emuya and Floki as if things don’t go to plan we need to be prepared to safely intervene if needed. 🐵 Floki update! 👉 Since arriving 2.5 months ago, howler monkey Floki has been settling into his new life at Merazonia. 🐒 For the first few weeks, Floki was most definitely not the confident alpha male character we expected him to be. Instead he revealed himself to be a sensitive and timid character, who needed time to adapt to his new home 🧡 💪 Two and a half months in and Floki is coming out of his shell! We are even starting to witness him asserting his dominance over the wild girls - something which shows great promise for the future 😍 In the coming weeks Floki will be having his first no-barrier interactions with the girls, in the form of closely monitored play dates as they join him one by one in his enclosure. It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved kinkajou Whistler 🕊️  💚 Whistler arrived in 2015 and soon became and exception to our hands-off rule as he had serious health issues and enjoyed human interaction which meant release wasn’t an option. Well, other than that one time a tree fell on his cage and he went on a three-week-long jungle adventure 😆 🌳 In recent years, Whistler had started to slow down and in 2022, we noticed some growths forming which turned out to be tumours. Over the course of a year, he underwent two surgeries to remove these but when they started to grow back, we knew we couldn’t put him through another invasive procedure ❤️‍🩹 Thank you to everyone who cared for Whistler, bringing him his favourite foods, filling his cage with the most glorious leafy branches and for giving him all the love he deserved 🥹 He will be dearly missed here at Merazonia but we know his memory will live on in so many of our hearts 🌈 Do you have a fond memory of Whistler? We would love to hear it! :: Es con gran tristeza que anunciamos el fallecimiento de nuestro querido cusumbo Whistler 🕊️ Whistler llegó en 2015 y pronto se convirtió en una excepción a nuestra regla de no interacción, pues tenía graves problemas de salud y disfrutaba del contacto humano, por lo que la liberación no era opción. It’s been just over a month since we opened the cage doors for our sub-adult woolly monkeys and we’re thrilled to report that 4 of our 5 teens are adapting well to their newfound freedom! 😍 🌳 Leo, Ojo, Pedro, and Django are thriving up at our release cage, where they explore the surrounding jungle a little more each day. 🐵 While these four have been sticking together incredibly well, Chancho surprised us on day 7 by venturing off solo and hasn’t been seen since. 👉 Every release involves some uncertainty and a concern of ours was most definitely Chancho’s disability. He had adapted incredibly well to life with one arm during his rehab journey however, and his strong character and resilience is what pushed us to give him his chance at freedom. After a tree fell on puma Pangui’s enclosure not too long ago, we were very relieved to know that she had not been injured nor experienced an unplanned release 😅 Once we ensured Pangui’s safety, we got to work assessing any other trees which could pose a risk, along with removing the fallen tree from the top of the cage 🌳 Thankfully, only a small section had been damaged meaning will be able to fix it in stages as the presence of too many people around her enclosure can be incredibly stressful for Pangui. Having removed a few trees, our next priority was preparing a safe hiding spot for Pangui so she didn’t feel too exposed. As you can see, these palm fronds worked very nicely - great job @halanne_228! 🛖 🌿 :: Tras la reciente caída de un árbol sobre el recinto de la puma Pangui, nos sentimos muy aliviados de que no haya resultado herida y que no se haya dado una liberación imprevista 😅 Una vez que garantizamos la seguridad de Pangui, nos pusimos manos a la obra para evaluar otros árboles que pudieran ser un riesgo, junto con la eliminación del árbol caído sobre la jaula 🌳 Afortunadamente, solo se dañó una parte pequeña y podremos arreglarla en fases, ya que la presencia de mucha gente alrededor del recinto es muy estresante para Pangui. Después de quitar algunos árboles de alrededor de su recinto, nuestra siguiente prioridad fue preparar un escondite seguro para que no se sintiera demasiado expuesta. Jaguar sighting on Merazonia’s trap cam! 🎥 It’s been nearly a year since a jaguar graced our trap cameras, so we we’re very glad to have spotted this healthy female recently, taking an afternoon stroll 😍 All over South America jaguars face vulnerability due to habitat loss and fragmentation as they rely on large spaces and abundant prey. Introducing Eddie - a baby Andean Porcupine who was found alone in a field of crops 🌱  close to Quito, with his mother no where to be seen. Young, vulnerable and not able to survive on his own, Eddie was handed over Tueri Wildlife Hospital who later handed him over to us. Not too much is known about Andean porcupines, other than the fact that they are mostly nocturnal, have a prehensile tail and their feet are perfectly adapted for their mostly arboreal lives 🌳 Eddie has been progressing well since arriving to us and as you can see, he very much enjoys his milk feeds! We expect Eddie to be with us for about 3/4 months before he will be ready for release 💚 :: Les presentamos a Eddie - un bebé puerco espín kichwa que fue encontrado solo en un campo de cultivo 🌱 cerca de Quito, su madre no logró ser observada por ningún lado. Joven, vulnerable e incapaz de sobrevivir por sí solo, Eddie fue entregado al Hospital Tueri Wildlife, que más tarde nos lo entregó a nosotros. Meet Tapu and Tini 🐵 - two neonatal woolly monkeys who were delivered to us recently by Tueri Wildlife Hospital in Quito. Thanks to the diligent care provided at @hfaunasilvestretueri , these two are our first ever woolly monkeys which we have been able to take a hands-off approach with from such a young age 🙌 This is due to the fact that they have learnt to depend on each other for the comforts and security they need, rather than humans. We hope we can continue this approach as they get older, as their cautiousness of humans will be extremely beneficial for their return to the wild ( 🤞) when they’re older 💚 :: Conozcan a Tapu y Tini 🐵 - dos chorongos neonatos quienes recién nos fueron entregados por Tueri Wildlife Hospital en Quito. Gracias a los meticulosos cuidados entregados por @hfaunasilvestretueri , estos dos son los primeros chorongos con los que hemos implementado un enfoque de cero contacto desde una edad muy temprana 🙌 Esto se debe, a que han aprendido a depender uno del otro para darse la comodidad y seguridad que necesitan, en lugar de depender de humanos. Meet Percy, a wild Saddleback tamarin who is hardly recognizable compared to when he first arrived! 🐒 Like nearly all animals we receive, Percy’s past remains a mystery, but we are able to piece together a likely story based on the information we gathered: 👉 Facial Injuries: Possibly caused by conflicts with other tamarins - not predators 👉 Strong fear of humans: suggests he wasn’t kept as a pet - wild origin 👉 Good bodily condition: indicates a natural, healthy diet - unlikely to have gotten this in a human home After two months of healing with us, Percy has recently been transferred to @yanacochawildlife centre along with fellow tamarin Hermi, where he will be returned to where he belongs: the wild! 🌳 :: Conozcan a Percy, un tamarín ensillado de dorso rojo silvestre, que está irreconocible en comparación con el día que llegó! 🐒 Como es el caso de muchos animales que recibimos, su pasado es un misterio, pero podemos reconstruir una posible historia basándonos en la información que recopilamos: 👉 Lesiones faciales: Posiblemente causadas por conflictos con otros tamarinos - no por depredadores. 👉 Fuerte miedo a los humanos: sugiere que no fue mantenido como mascota - origen silvestre. 👉 Buena condición corporal: indica una dieta natural y saludable - poco probable si hubiera estado en un hogar humano. Introducing Merazonia’s brand-new viewing platform! 😍 It has long been known that amazing views can be seen from Merazonia’s “Capuchin Hill,” which overlooks our sanctuary. On clear days, you can see all the way to the start of the Amazon basin while having the mighty Andean Mountains rising up to your right ⛰️ So, we had a cool idea: let’s make this view even more enjoyable! Do our faces sum up the fact that we are absolutely blown away by the fundraiser volunteer Damien organised for us recently!?! 🥹 In the space of 14 days, Damien successfully raised $2250 in order to purchase a series of items for our hardworking management/long term team 🥲 Without donations, Merazonia would struggle to exist. That’s why all the money we raise goes directly to the animals. So, when people like Damien come along and help us afford things such as new waterproofs, head torches and tasty snacks from home (the list continues) .. we could not appreciate it more! Mr.G Pickles update! 💚 Mr.G, the black agouti’s journey toward freedom has turned into a soft release, a balance between life in the wild and supplementary care. 🦥 Sloth release! This young three-toed sloth arrived to us, after he was discovered up a tree on private property in a nearby urban area. The relocation became necessary due to the unsuitable environment for a sloth 🏘️ Once arriving at Merazonia he was given a quick health-check by our vet. He was deemed healthy and ready to be released back into the jungle 🌴! :: 🦥 ¡Liberación de un perezoso! Beautiful Rumi 😍 🦜 Red-lored parrot Rumi used to reside in our big bird aviary but, since she was starting to be picked on a little and macaw Beachboy was looking for a friend, we tried to see if a friendship made in heaven would happen between these two! Not all things work out and for Beachboy and Rumi, it wasn’t quite the happily ever after we were hoping for 🤷‍♀️ It’s not all bad though, turns our Rumi is a great flyer and now enjoys a semi wild life in the forests around Merazonia 🌳 :: La hermosa Rumi 😍 🦜 La amazona frentirroja Rumi, solía vivir en nuestro aviario de especies grandes. A rare glimpse of kinkajou Kevin 🌚 🌙 Due to their nocturnal natures, it is very difficult to ever provide visual updates on our kinkajous! 😍 Photographer Stew managed to capture this image when Kevin was relocated to his release site recently, as he was checking out his new surroundings 👀 Unfortunately, despite multiple attempts, Kevin has proven to not possess the necessary instincts for successful integration back into the wild. Over the weekend, Merazonia joined an event held by the “National Animal Movement of Ecuador” @manimalistas to discuss animal rights and their protection 👏 🌎 The meeting was the 6th of its kind and our very own, Ana, went along to support the event by representing the work we do and discussing the problems wildlife faces 🐒 Law was one of the main topics, as public policy can aid and enforce animal protection. Currently, an Animal Rights Bill is being reviewed in the Ecuadorian Parliament - a big step in the right direction. Sadly, at Merazonia we see first-hand that the illegal trafficking of wild animals still poses a huge threat to biodiversity, but it is great to see so many people come together with a common goal in mind: to raise awareness about the problem and advocate for change! Meet Otto, a young White-Bellied spider monkey who is temporarily calling Merazonia home 🐒 As often is the case, we don’t know too much about where orphan Otto came from, just that he was handed over to a nearby zoo and we estimate him to be about 4/5 months old. Otto is only passing through Merazonia as we do not house spider monkeys at our centre. This is because we are located at too high of an altitude for spider monkeys making release impossible and housing them complicated. We made an exception for little Otto though, in order to provide him with the specialised care he needed, prior to moving on to more exciting (hopefully wilder) things! Otto está de paso por Merazonia, ya que no albergamos monos araña en nuestro centro, al estar situados a una altitud demasiado elevada para los monos araña, lo cual imposibilita su liberación y complica su alojamiento. Sin embargo, hicimos una excepción con el pequeño Otto para proporcionarle los cuidados especializados que necesitaba antes de pasar a aventuras más emocionantes (¡esperamos que más silvestres!). Meet Mr G Pickles! 🐽 This young agouti was handed over to Merazonia recently after being kept as an illegal pet. #NEWARRIVAL Meet woolly monkey Koba 🐒 Koba arrived to Merazonia almost 1 month ago but due to a sudden and significant rise in young primates arriving to our centre, we haven’t been able to find the time to introduce you! Little Koba was found on the streets of a local town 🏡 after most likely escaping from where he had been kept as an illegal pet. It was clear from day 1 with Koba that his instincts were strong. On his first jungle walk with his human surrogate, he climbed to the tops of trees and long called for his group, hoping they were somewhere close by 💔 Thankfully shortly after Koba’s arrival we received Lana, who he now lives with full time. Meaning, we have been able to step back entirely from any hands on care - a promising sign for their future release! More news coming soon about Koba, Lana and their newest friend… Chester! We have just the thing for you: “Precious Pepi prepares for life in the Jungle” - a short story by volunteer @jasonbrendel 📖 “Once upon a dime and a dilly, there was a little Red Howler Monkey named Pepi. Some argued her name should have been PeePee (for obvious reasons) but it never quite stuck. Poopoo McGoo was tossed around as an alternative option, but it was ultimately decided that this young bundle of joy would be named Pepi. Her wondrous eyes looked out on the world and thought of all the great trees she would one day climb and sweet sweet leaves she would crumble and munch; but Pepi was a hesitant girl. Against all odds, this three-toed sloth was returned to the wild 🌳🦥 ❓Fun fact: Sloths do climb down to the ground to go to the toilet about once a week 💩 They have also been known to travel large distances along the ground to move to new feeding sites and/or to find a mate - including swimming through rivers! 😱 For the safety (and prior medical treatment) of this individual however, it was decided to bring him back to Merazonia for further observations. Baby woolly Shimi seeking some extra comfort from her surrogate figure 🥺 Since arriving to Merazonia 9 months ago, Shimi has come a long way. She’s almost moved in with our larger baby woolly group multiple times, only to be taken out after regressing in her progress and having her confidence seriously knocked 😔 This backtracking is most likely due to the severe trauma Shimi experienced before being rescued. She was stolen from the wild, after being torn away from the body of her killed mother 💔 To support Shimi on her journey and help us provide her with the specialised care she needs, please consider adopting her with a monthly donation. As is the story for many, he couldn’t quite get enough of Merazonia and returned 2 years later. And well, he’s pretty much been here ever since! Upon his return, Allans curiosity and passion for enriching the lives of the animals in our care grew 🌱 Allan now specialises in creating tailored enrichment schedules adapted to the species, ensuring that their natural instincts thrive and their minds and bodies are kept active and healthy. Julia update! 🦜 Since arriving to Merazonia with terribly chopped wings, baby Blue-headed parrot Julia was in quite a poor state 💔 She was still begging for food - a sign that it hadn’t been long since she'd been relying on her mum in the wild to regurgitate food for her. Since then, Julia has matured a lot 🌈 She’s even been introduced to our other blue-heads and spends a few hours with them daily. Supervision is still needed but we’re happy with her progress and are hopeful that it won’t be long before she becomes a permanent member of our small birds flock 💫 💙 :: ¡Actualización sobre Julia! 🦜 Al llegar a Merazonia con las alas horriblemente cortadas, la lorita cabeciazul juvenil Julia se encontraba en muy mal estado 💔 Seguía pidiendo comida- un signo de que hace poco que seguía dependiendo de su madre para que le regurgitara comida. Pepi update! 📢 This sassy baby red howler has come a long way since arriving to Merazonia and we couldn’t be prouder 🥹 In the past weeks Pepita’s confidence has soared, and she now spends her days showing off her new found climbing skills while munching on every leaf possible! In recent days her surrogate mums and dads have been taking extra care in showing her the best leaves to eat, a job her mum would naturally have done for her in the wild 🌿 PS.
